Climate Heating in New England Faster Than the Vast Majority on Earth, Analysis Shows.

The US region known for its colonial history, sweet syrup and frigid, snow-bound winters is experiencing a dramatic change. Fresh analysis shows that New England is heating up faster than nearly any other place on the globe.

Unprecedented Pace of Change

The velocity of temperature increase in New England makes it the fastest-heating area of the contiguous United States, according to the study. The pace of its warming has apparently increased notably in the past five years.

"Temperatures is not only increasing, it's speeding up," explained a lead researcher on the study. "It's really sped up in the past few years, which surprised me. Our regional climate is shifting in a new direction, after being relatively stable for thousands of years."

The analysis places the north-eastern US among the fastest-warming zones in the world, alongside the polar region and sections of Europe and China. "The region is now heading towards being like the south-eastern US," the researcher noted.

Analysis Approach and Results

For the analysis, researchers examined three datasets on day and night temperatures and snow cover dating back to 1900. The analysis encompassed the six states of the New England region.

They found that New England has warmed by an mean of 2.5°C (4.5°F) from 1900 to 2024. This is substantially higher than the worldwide mean, with the planet heating by around 1.3 degrees Celsius in the same period.

"This represents extremely rapid warming, which is worrying," said the study author.

Oceanic Influences and the "Energy Storage"

A primary cause for this exceptional build-up of heat may be changes in the North Atlantic. The global seas are taking in the vast majority of the excess heat trapped by emissions.

In the north Atlantic, an increase of cold, fresh water from Greenland’s melting glaciers is disrupting the Gulf Stream. This is directing warmer water into the Gulf of Maine, congregating heat along the shoreline that is then pushed further inland by prevailing winds.

"Surplus thermal energy from global warming is being held in the oceans like a massive battery," explained the researcher. "This is now being discharged into the air and New England is a receiver of that heat."

Impacts on Life and Extremes

Once considered a mild climate haven, New England has experienced extreme weather shocks in the past decade, including devastating flooding and prolonged drought.

The rising heat poses a threat to cherished elements of local culture:

  • Syrup production is being affected by changing seasonal patterns.
  • Cold-weather activities are disrupted; an hockey tournament on Vermont and New Hampshire lakes has been called off or moved repeatedly due to unsafe ice conditions.
  • Ski resorts have struggled because of inadequate snow.

"I reside just outside Boston and when I moved here in the 1990s I used to ice skate on the ponds all the time," said the researcher. "That tradition has largely vanished from large parts of southern New England."
