The announcement regarding a deal expected to result in the freeing of hostages detained in the Gaza Strip for over 24 months has caused delight and comfort across Israel.
An organization which has campaigned for the return of Israeli captives in Gaza expressed âdeep appreciationâ for what it termed an âhistoric breakthroughâ.
The agreementâwhich still must be approved by the Israeli war cabinetâwill see the return of 20 living hostages as well as the remains of 28 deceased captives in return for 250 Palestinian prisoners imprisoned for life in Israeli jails plus 1,700 individuals from the Gaza region.
So far, 148 hostages have come backâlargely through earlier truce agreementsâ51 bodies have been recovered while eight hostages have been rescued.
Jubilant scenes took place at Hostages Square located in Tel Aviv as hundreds of people gathered ahead of the agreementâs signing.
The gathering began clapping and dancing beneath US and Israeli flagsâone woman displaying a placard that read: âWe adore Trump.â
âThis is a wondrous day,â the woman said.
Another, Yael, aged 50, cried while observing the people celebrating.
âI am thrilledâitâs such a relief,â she stated. âWe must witness their return home to their families.â
The mom and sibling of a captive Israeli Matan Zangauker lit fireworks to mark the announcement of his impending homecoming.
âThey are returning!... Matan is coming home!â Einav Zangauker exclaimed as she held her daughter.
Viki Cohen, the parent of Israeli hostage Nimrod Cohen, shared online: âMy child, you are coming home.â
The delight was palpable in the streets of Tel Aviv following the announcement.
Former British-Israeli hostage Emily Damari celebrated alongside another released captive Romi Gonen, uttering blessings of thankfulness, then toasting âTo lifeâ, meaning âfor lifeâ. She has advocated for the release of her companions, twins Gali and Ziv Berman.
Their brother Liran Berman wrote: âMy Gali and Ziv, I love you so much. You are coming back.â
The cousin of Gil Dickman Carmel Gat was captured on 7 October 2023, and her body found in a tunnel in Gaza nearly a year after. He has participated with other captivesâ relatives in advocating for an agreement that brings the return of everyone still detained in Gaza.
âI hardly believe this is actually happening. Weâve been waiting for such a long time and now itâs here,â he said.
He said he was âbrokenâ that Carmel will not be among those coming back home yet felt âglowing with joyâ for the families of the captives who are at last coming back.
Eitan Horn was seized from kibbutz Nir Oz in Israelâs south together with his sibling.
Dalia Cusnir, whose relative by marriage Eitan Horn remains captive in Gaza, remarked she felt like she was living âin a dreamâ.
âWe are immensely thankful to the President and all he has done for us. We feel that this could be the beginning of the end of this ordeal, and embracing Eitan seems nearer than before,â she commented.
However, she warned that it remained too soon to rejoice.
âUntil the last hostage is here, we wonât open the bubbly. Weâre going to keep fighting... until the end,â she affirmed.
âNumerous events can happen until the last moment so this is why we are extremely cautious. We simply wish to thank everyone who participated in the work and ensure this agreement is done... We will celebrate only when the last captive is safely home.â
Eitan was taken from kibbutz Nir Oz in southern Israel along with his brother Iair, who was released from detainment through a truce agreement earlier this year.
