Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and no fewer than 15 additional individuals got wounded in a seemingly deliberate detonation from gas at a country home in northern Italy.

Event Timeline

The blast was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the property in the vicinity of Verona to enforce an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.

All three deceased individuals were members of the Italian military police.

Investigation Developments

One male and one female were arrested at the location and one more individual who escaped subsequent to the blast was apprehended soon after. Each of them have been transported to hospital.

The blast could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the scene displayed the structure turned into a pile of rubble.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” said the Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who noted that attempts had been made to remove the three family members in the past.

Background and Motive

The leader of the Veneto region, President Zaia, stated the property was under an removal notice due to unpaid amounts incurred by the property owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to talk with the siblings who had locked themselves into the property. When the police came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators suspect one of the siblings set off the detonation.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander the police commander informed news outlets.

A gas canister had been set off, and the explosion precisely impacted our personnel,” he added.

Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the property, the minister confirmed.

Impact Assessment

Those injured by the incident comprised 11 other members of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a emergency responder.

Based on information from the local prosecutor, the property was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.

He was convinced the detonation had taken place on a story above the entrance and informed the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Shortly before the incident, he revealed members had “detected a whistling noise, likely the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Local Response

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants informed Italian media, mentioning that the trio had in the past stated to “blow themselves up” rather than vacate the property.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stood alongside other government officials in paying tribute to the trio of personnel who had been killed in the line of duty.
