One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is leaving the directorate at OpenAI, just a week after a batch of emails between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became widely known.
The economist commented in an announcement that he was "grateful for the privilege to have contributed, enthusiastic about the potential of the enterprise, and eagerly await tracking their development".
Summers, who once headed the prestigious university, announced on Monday that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his connections with the convicted sex offender.
The recently released emails demonstrated that the economist exchanged messages with Epstein until the eve of his 2019 detention for accused sex trafficking of minors.
In a separate statement, the technology organization said it respected Summers' determination to step down.
"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the viewpoint he offered to the directors," the organization remarked.
This development follows after the two houses of the US legislature decided on this week to endorse a bill that would require the Department of Justice to make public its files on the case.
The legislation will then proceed to the administration of President Trump for endorsement. Trump has said he intends to endorse the bill, after reversing his position on the issue following pressure from his base.
A group of Epstein-related correspondence released by the Congressional committee days ago included multiple well-known personalities in the Epstein's former circle, without indicating any illegal behavior by those people.
The messages showed that the economist and the financier regularly had dinners together, with the billionaire often attempting to connect the official to prominent international personalities.
After the correspondence were made available with the general audience, he said he took "total ownership for my misguided choice to continue interacting with Mr Epstein".
He continued that he desired "to restore faith and mend bonds with the people most important to me".
Summers occupied senior posts under party leaders; serving as Treasury chief under President Clinton, and as director of the White House economic team under President Obama.
He led the institution from the early 2000s and continues to be a academic there. When announcing his withdrawal from public commitments recently on Monday, he said he would continue his teaching commitments.
Following his declaration on Monday, the policy organization, a progressive think tank in the capital where he was a researcher, announced that he was ceased to be connected with the organization.
The former official joined the directorate of the AI company, which creates ChatGPT, in 2023 - following a defeated move to oust its top executive OpenAI's head.
