MTG’s collaboration with Avatar won’t hit the general market before the end of the week, yet after early access events over the last few days, an affordable green creature experienced a surge in price.
From the initial reveals, this small creature garnered significant interest. This two-power, two-toughness priced at G and 1 mana, Badgermole Cub includes level 1 earthbending (arguably the most effective of the four bending abilities in the set). The major perk here comes from another power: Each time a creature is tapped to produce mana, you gain one extra green mana.
When first listed, this card could be purchased at around $27. Post-prerelease, however, the market price has shot up to $49.66 including listings for sale at $60.00. Why are we seeing Vivi prices for this cute lil guy? Primarily due to the incredible mana acceleration it enables.
As it hits play, Badgermole Cub transforms one land to a creature land granting it earthbend. And with that second ability, if it stays in play, every earthbent land yields two mana instead of one — in addition to any creatures in your control that generate mana.
A clear choice to combine with includes the classic Llanowar Elves, an inexpensive 1/1 that produces G mana. Yet there are plenty of alternative mana dorks out there. Druid of the Cowl is a more expensive alternative that’s a 1/3 costing two mana in comparison.
By playing lands, creatures that tap for mana, plus the cub, it's simple to summon a massive pricey monster on the board early in the game. The situation escalates exponentially if you keep the pressure on from that point.
By incorporating a secondary color in this strategy, options such as versatile mana producers work perfectly that can make any color of mana. Another card, this powerful dryad allows you to put one extra land every round plus transforms your entire land base providing all land types. It's also worth trying for example this six-mana enchantment, which for six mana grants all of your permanents the capacity to produce any color mana — even all creatures you have on the board.
The cub might seem overpowered when it comes to accelerating your resources, but what closes out the game for a deck like this? An often-seen solution already is Ashaya, Soul of the Wild. Its power and toughness are both equal to the number of lands you control, plus it turns each creature you own Forests in addition to their other types. Essentially, all your creatures you control is able to produce double green by tapping.
Harmonious Grovestrider is a costly, large threat that benefits from lots of lands (similar to Ashaya, its power and toughness are equal to the number of lands you control).
This Planeswalker fits really well as a go-to Planeswalker. Her passive ability allows Forest lands produce extra green. (With a Badgermole Cub, this results in those lands yield three G.) Her plus ability is essentially an early earthbend, putting +1/+1 counters on a land, a useful effect but does not overlap with the cub's ability. Her -8 ability, though, renders your entire land base unbreakable and lets you draw out all the remaining forests from your library. Once you trigger this power, this typically means you win.
This card is pretty much essential for all green Avatar deck focusing on Earthbending. By including Gruul colors, you can use Bumi. It possesses earthbend 4, and if it hits a player to a player, all land creatures become untapped and can attack again. Even though Bumi has emerged as a beloved leader, this small creature will surely stay among the top, possibly the sought-after card from this expansion.
