Donald Trump’s corporate entity increased its hiring of overseas employees on temporary visas this period, even as his administration was placing obstacles for other businesses wanting to do the identical, a report published recently claimed.
According to data from the federal labor department, the business aimed to hire at least nearly 200 overseas employees in 2025 for temporary positions at the former president’s Mar-a-Lago resort, golf facilities and his Virginia winery.
The number of applications for temporary work visas for workers including servers, office assistants, housekeepers, kitchen staff and farm workers was the highest ever filed by the company, and increased from over 120 in 2021, when Trump’s first term ended.
It was also the fifth instance in 10 years that the former president had attempted to hire more than 100 overseas workers for seasonal jobs at Mar-a-Lago, according to available data.
The revelation coincides with a tightening on legal immigration by his administration that has included the implementation of a $100,000 fee on H1-B visas; increased review of the activities of the 55 million people who already hold US visas; and tighter regulations for foreign students and journalists.
In total, the business sought to hire over 560 foreign laborers over the five years Trump has been in the presidency, from 2017 to 2021 and during the upcoming year.
Significantly, Trump was questioned by some in the GOP this period for comments defending the necessity for overseas employees when a business was unable to find people with “particular skills” to fill certain positions.
“You can’t just say a country is entering, going to invest $10bn to construct a plant, and going to take people off an unemployment line who have been unemployed in five years, and they’re going to start producing their defense systems. It doesn’t work that well,” he stated to a host after it was implied that foreign workers undercut the pay of US workers.
The administration refused a inquiry for response, and the business did not immediately respond to an inquiry.
