Tuchel Desires Jude Bellingham's Fire So Long As The Three Lions' Star Sets Aside His Ego Outside.

One snub proved sufficient. Another and it could have seemed spiteful from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is much too clever not to know that winning the World Cup will likely need help from Jude Bellingham, although it is also on the midfielder to fit into the tactical structures and squad hierarchies necessary with England now that he is returned to the manager's supportive environment.

The manager desires his aggressive mentality, his passion, but it is a matter of channeling it appropriately. Individual quality counts but England have learned the hard way that there is a cost when celebrity takes over. Nevertheless, a statement has been delivered.

Bellingham had much to ponder after being left out of the recent team selection. He observed the national side qualify at next summer’s World Cup without him. He saw the young talent excel as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He heard the coach discuss valuing the team's dynamism and values. Naturally, he has reacted in winning fashion, netting important strikes for his club against Barcelona and Juventus. He had to be picked; another omission would have left his World Cup hopes precarious.

The expectation is that Tuchel will have a midfielder concentrating on frightening rivals rather than his own colleagues. Ultimately, on a pure footballing level, there is little benefit to creating tension with one of the best players in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time not playing has shown him that representing the national team is a valuable, precarious thing. The coach, on his side, can now provide cover for the youngster after showing that he is unafraid to drop big names.

“No issue exists regarding him, there is no problem about his personality,” Tuchel said. “Jude just has that aggression. It takes that kind of fire to succeed at the top that he reached. Everyone need to support him and establish a atmosphere which he can channel his drive against rivals and in pursuit of success we are working towards as a team.”

Bellingham dominated the spotlight at the team news conference for this month’s dead-rubber qualifiers against Serbia and the other. Who else? Well, how about Phil Foden? This is another prodigious No 10 requiring coaching. Foden has not played for England since spring and has struggled to hit the heights this year but the boss was impressed by the 25-year-old after how he played in the Champions League match versus Borussia Dortmund this week.

The question, though, is the best way to deploy the various creators at the team's disposal. Rogers and Eberechi Eze merit inclusion and there will be a strong case to select another youngster once he overcomes a fitness issue. Would taking five No 10s to the World Cup be too many? Gareth Southgate never found the correct balance at Euro 2024. He made concessions by squeezing Foden and Bellingham into the starting lineup, restricting the captain's influence as a result.

It seems unlikely Tuchel repeating that if it harms the attacking balance. There is room for one No 10, with quick attackers on the flanks. Clear roles is beneficial. Bellingham is in as a No 10. The new call-up, called up for the first time, is a No 8 and the returning Adam Wharton will compete with another player as a No 6. There will also be no position on the wing for Foden, who must play central. The coach prefers him near Kane. “It is illogical to ask Phil: ‘You are needed in the team but there’s no space in your preferred role, can you play left wing? Or the right wing?” he said. “He is to feature in the advanced midfield role, in the middle of the pitch. I've long had this fantasy regarding him for years. I think it fits his style the most.”

Tuchel conceded there are occasions when the player has seemed out of sorts in an national jersey. “One senses as if, ‘Is he truly happy? And someone of his caliber who has this childish joy for the game, then clearly something is not right, be it his role, the setup, it's unclear.

“I think he is additionally so used to playing for Man City in a certain structure, with a defined role. I think he profits greatly from clear instructions. What is my position? In which positions should I turn? Where am I supposed to accelerate the match? Where do I have to defensive duties?”

The manager discussed one star bursting through for easy finishes and the other netting goals from outside the box. He added he has a longlist of many candidates. Morgan Gibbs-White, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have dropped out. Nico O’Reilly is recognized for his excellent performances for City at defense. Interest is high.

The omission of Ollie Watkins means there is no direct replacement for the captain in this squad. Fascinatingly, he suggested using the playmaker as a deep-lying striker versus one opponent or the other. Anthony Gordon, Marcus Rashford, Bellingham and the winger are other options should he be absent. Since the place is booked, this is a moment for testing tactics.

At the same time, it is additionally a moment to get the understanding with his teammate going. It's surprising that you have to go back to Bellingham setting up Kane to net in a friendly win versus Scotland in September 2023 to find the one and only time in many appearances for the national team when the duo combined for a goal. The coach will know that Kane and Bellingham only exchanged the ball once during the team's ties with Denmark and Slovenia at the Euros. The connection is lacking.

“This is where eventually it falls to the responsibility of the individuals,” he said. He is not afraid to deliver home truths. Remains a feeling of the player having to prove himself. He cannot even be assured to start against the upcoming opponents. The manager wants Bellingham committed but he will be monitoring him carefully. Set aside the ego at the door. It will make a very strong England team into an more effective one.
